He speaks 4 languages, a distinct advantage in a multi-cultural county like Montgomery. Spiros Balntas is the Director of Business Recruitment and is excited to help transform MCEDC into one of the most competitive economic development agencies in the country. He hails from the Sunshine State, most recently developing and implementing business and economic development strategies for the Central Florida Development Council.
Armed with a diverse economic development experience, Spiros has also been the Senior Business and Real Estate Manager for the Miami Downtown Development Authority. He has served in business development with foreign government agencies such as the UK Trade & Investment and the Taiwan External Trade Development Council.
Spiros received a bachelor’s degree from Florida International University and holds a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) designation from the International Economic Development Council. An exclusive designation earned by only 1,100 people nationwide, it indicates extensive experience and continuous education in the field. He is implementing these best practices to work in Montgomery County.
Embracing the Florida life prior to his move here, Spiros partook in regattas during the Red Bull Flugtag/Air Show — competitors soaring their homemade flying machines. He also ran in the ING Miami half marathon. For now, he’s traded running shoes for biking shoes, and can be found exploring any one of Montgomery County’s biking trails. Best professional advice he’s received? Work smarter, not harder. Spiros is a master of both. And by the way, those 4 languages are Italian, Spanish, Greek and English.
Some people leave a lasting impression. Brandon Bedford, Research, Planning and Policy Analyst, for MCEDC, is one of those people. Hired as a contractor at MCEDC’s inception, he showed the team his first-rate research and analytic skills before moving on to work with Montgomery Planning as a Research Associate focused on countywide planning policy. Brandon has re-joined the MCEDC team tasked with providing research and analytics to support the local business community. Responsibilities include preparing data for use in reports, charts and graphics; designing and administering surveys and other data collection instruments; and contributing to strategic planning activities.
He's immersed himself in important Montgomery County projects, from work with the County’s Innovation Program and Thingstitute projects to work with the Food Council on food security issues. Brandon is helping MCEDC continue its increasingly data-driven approach to attract, retain, and cultivate businesses in our county.
When not diving into numbers, Brandon may be found exploring the many ethnic restaurants that Montgomery County is famous for – Ethiopian, Nepali, Columbian, Vietnamese, El Salvadoran, Indian, Burmese, Thai, Peruvian – with downtown Silver Spring being his community of choice for an inspirational and global taste tour. That range for taste buds isn’t the only diversity he celebrates. Brandon loves Montgomery County for the way local leadership prioritizes and celebrates community diversity.
A graduate of Emory University with a BA in Environmental Studies, he went on to receive a Master of Public Policy, at the University of Maryland, College Park. Research has always drawn in Brandon; one of his first research jobs was in a lab where he grew, flash froze and evaluated mosquitos with the goal of helping to curb the spread of West Nile disease. With life sciences a central industry in Montgomery County, he looks forward to spreading his wings as part of the MCEDC team to support the growth of life sciences and other companies through research.
If a ribbon cutting to celebrate a business expansion is on the calendar, there’s a good chance Lynne Stein Benzion is on hand to support it. She is MCEDC’s Director of Business Retention and Expansion, with many years of experience in the economic development arena and deep roots in the local business community. She visualizes the true potential of MCEDC as a regional and national leader that capitalizes on the County’s cultural diversity to help new ideas and industries grow and thrive. She looks forward to helping develop programs that strengthen the economy. Lynne is the team’s Life Science Specialist and is the go-to expert for any project that involves a BioHealth company. She finds working with these companies exciting, as they make significant and lasting positive impacts to human life and health.
She has worked as the Vice President of Strategic Planning for the Business Development Board in Palm Beach County, Florida, where she was responsible for short-and long-term planning as well as special projects. She also helped develop strategies, oversaw major projects, and managed task forces. Locally, she was at Rockville Economic Development, Inc, (REDI) for almost a decade, most of the time as Deputy Director, where in addition to retention and redevelopment duties, she orchestrated major conferences and was a public face of the organization, regularly tapped by media for her business expertise.
A graduate of the University of Virginia, she holds a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) designation from the International Economic Development Council, earned by only 1,100 people nationwide. It indicates extensive experience and continuous education in the field. She is also a graduate of Leadership Montgomery, Class of 2012.
Off-hours, you may find Lynne ice skating at Cabin John or Wheaton Regional Park, taking in a museum exhibit, cooking and eating incredible produce from one of the local farmers’ markets, or more likely in rehearsal. Lynne is a classically-trained singer with the Washington Master Chorale, a preeminent professional and volunteer classical chorus. Like a choir, her economic development work brings together many diverse voices.
Christy Blake knows her way around economic development. She also knows her way around the metro region, having worked in economic development capacities in Loudoun, Fairfax and Alexandria, VA, as well as Hagerstown, MD. Christy holds a Master in Urban Planning from Virginia Tech, with a graduate certificate in Economic Development. Her broad, regional experience is a perfect fit for her new role as Business Development Manager for MCEDC.
Christy joins MCEDC most recently from the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development, where she was a Business Development Manager. She’s also held other management positions for economic development offices in Northern Virginia, working in community building, revitalization efforts, business development and research. Christy is taking lessons learned over the years and using that experience to influence strategy, direction and idea generation in Montgomery.
With her regional perspective, Christy is excited about the innovation that is happening in MoCo, along with the county’s welcoming and ‘business friendly’ approach. She appreciates MoCo as a unique melting pot of cultures and for its diversity in business.
When not cooking up business development, she may be found entertaining with her regionally-famous Collard Green Wrap Butternut Squash and Beef Enchiladas. Hiking, yoga, mountain biking and travel are her passions, with future getaway plans to include Colombia, South America. Best professional advice she’s received can be translated into math equations: 5+4=9 and so does 3x3 — choose your own path and allow others to do the same. Good advice no matter what county you live in.
Nicole and art have always gone together, like peas in a pod. As a little girl, she loved to color and create books and posters using any art supplies she could find. Today, she uses her creative mind to help the marketing team brand MCEDC, including the website and identity system, conceptualizing for print and digital, and developing collateral and tradeshow materials. She’s a visual thinker with a passion for art direction, storytelling, and design.
Her experience includes work at advertising agencies, in-house creative and design studios, working for companies including Discovery Communications, Johnson & Johnson, Nestlé, AARP and Toys ”R” Us. Most recently, she worked in the creative department at the advertising & public affairs firm of GMMB.
A graduate of the Corcoran College of Art + Design, Nicole is excited to tell the story of Montgomery County through marketing initiatives, outdoor campaigns, branding, and social. She lives and works in the county, and enjoys finding new parks and exploring hot spots around town like RIO Washingtonian Center and Downtown Crown.
She lived overseas for most of her childhood as the daughter of a State Department Foreign Service Officer — not many kids can say they’ve lived in Belgium, Canada, Chad, Djibouti, France and Mexico. Being a child of the world helped Nicole gain a different perspective and appreciate diversity. But the one place that always felt like home was Montgomery County. She’s happy to be back to raise her kids in a county that has top schools and values diversity.
Professionally, she plans to join the Art Director’s Club of Washington, DC and AIGA, a professional association for designers. Personally, she still loves to color with her kids.
Catie Cappadona is the first person to greet you at MCEDC. As the Receptionist and Office Coordinator, she “keeps the caffeine flowing and the smiles going”—along with everything in between. Catie helps to ensure that the office is running smoothly and efficiently. Always ready and willing to support any staff member in need of assistance, she manages the office equipment, assists with procurement, supports the operations team, and acts as the liaison for building-related issues.
Catie has worked in the registration department of a hospital and as an office coordinator for a government contracting firm that focused on Medicare and Medicaid fraud. She is working on a degree in Psychology and is active in the LGBT community.
Happy to be back in Montgomery County (having grown up in Bethesda) she sees all of the changes and development as being truly remarkable. A fifth generation MoCo resident, Catie enjoys being surrounded by her large, mostly local family. She appreciates how welcoming Montgomery County residents are, making it easier to connect and network.
If you’re an early riser like Catie, you may find her getting the first of several iced vanilla lattes at Dunkin Donuts. Nor can she pass up a really great burger at Shake Shack. Catie isn’t afraid to do a standup comedy set at the DC Improv. A city girl at heart, she loves to explore from Georgetown to NYC—always with her trusty Canon EOS in tow. The best professional advice she has received has served her well: be early for appointments but a little late for dates—that’ll keep them on their toes.
Every visit to MCEDC starts with Meaghann Diez, who is the go-to person for coordinating projects, schedules, meetings and office activities. She is the Executive Assistant to David Petr, helping to keep his busy schedule on track, assisting with correspondence and overseeing numerous office responsibilities. In addition, Meaghann is a Project Manager, helping to facilitate and coordinate team projects, events, tradeshows and conferences.
Meaghann joins the company with strong experience in administrative and procurement, especially for construction and development companies. Previous employers include Mid-Atlantic Builders, Wilco Companies, Axent Realty Group and Keller Brothers. She has also been the Executive Assistant to two Vice Presidents while at Healthy Directions, supporting a staff of 90-plus employees. From small to large companies, Meaghann has it well covered.
Meaghann is excited to be part of an organization that is helping others grow and thrive in the community where she lives and works. As a long-time resident of Montgomery County, she has seen the tremendous growth first hand, and knows her way around the county. Originally from San Francisco, she’s lived in Gaithersburg, Poolesville and Germantown. Her favorite restaurant is Cava, a homegrown success story that’s quickly added locations around the region — and started by local guys she knew growing up in Gaithersburg.
She gives of her time to local nonprofits, especially those working with youth, including Maryland Leadership Workshops and the Sandy Hook Promise foundation. She and her family stay active, frequently grabbing all 4 kids and 2 dogs, and heading to local parks or sporting events. They often cheer on hometown favorite teams, like the Washington Wizards or Washington Nationals. With Meaghann’s top-notch organizational skills, we’re glad she’s now playing for the MCEDC team.
Growing up in Spring, Texas, Warren willed a creative lifeboat out of museums, 60s musicals, Eames chairs and everything Halston! Through the years he sharpened his conceptual creativity and ability to assimilate abstract concepts into art — skills he continues to hone today as the Vice President of Marketing for MCEDC.
Warren leads the creative strategy for MOCO LABS — MCEDC’s marketing team, as well as manages external vendors — all in partnership to brand MCEDC and Montgomery County as a great place to do business. He loves the strategic interconnectivity of print and digital, social and public relations campaigns, and how they can craft lifestyles and change minds. He is the creative force behind innovative video campaigns including: Think Success, We Are Montgomery, #moco365 and Strength in Numbers.
Warren holds a Bachelor of Science in Advertising from The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining MCEDC, Warren led, guided and created national branding campaigns for Young & Rubicam New York, Agency 212, FCB Draft, Discovery Communications, NRG Energy and Capital One Financial.
The MOCO LABS marketing team, with Warren at the helm, provided the creative strategy that helped Montgomery County make the shortlist for Amazon HQ2. The team also feels proud and lucky to have won a 2018 Gold for thinkmoco.com from the International Economic Development Council, a 2018 Gold ADDY for the MCEDC logo, and a 2018 Gold for We Are Montgomery — #moco365 from the Communicator Awards.
When not in the lab, he can be found roaming the many fascinating cultural venues of MoCo including taking in a play at Olney Theatre or enjoying live music at the Fillmore. In D.C., you might find him discovering the perfect brunch in Eastern Market, taking in a museum or enjoying theatre with friends. If someone asks, “What are you wearing?” You can count on it being from Banana Republic, his stylist of choice. A man of good taste, he’s using his Interior Design degree to help choose the décor of our offices. He approaches each day with optimism and joy and counts himself lucky to be in a profession he loves. And yes, he still wears Halston Z-14.
What’s constant in the world of operations? The fact that there are ever changing needs and priorities, and that’s why we have Stacey Hardy at the helm. As Vice President of Operations, Stacey is the solid, steady captain helping to define processes and implement infrastructure and systems to support the growth of MCEDC. She oversees vendors and manages internal functions from facility management and human resources to training, accounting and IT.
Stacey’s experience is extensive, previously serving for 8 years as the Director of Operations for the Medical Care for Children Partnership Foundation, a public/private partnership with the Fairfax County government. She also spent 8 years as Director of Operations for the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies where she managed key projects for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Much of her career has centered around organizations that improve the lives of children and families – and she views her work at MCEDC as another way to contribute to the strength and vitality of families and communities.
Stacey holds a Master of Science degree in Not-for-Profit Management from UMUC, and is a member of the Society for Nonprofits. She enjoys exploring new restaurants and parks in the region with her family. When she finds time for herself, Stacey has discovered a Bethesda business called Hope Floats, flotation therapy that’s equal parts relaxing and invigorating. Like many, she jumped on the FitBit bandwagon as it gained popularity, logging 25,000 steps a day (that’s 10 miles!) When it broke while vacationing, Stacey took it as a sign to give the FitBit, and her knees, a break. A former track & field sprinter from her undergraduate days at the University of Maryland, we’re happy Stacey is now running MCEDC’s operations.
Each morning, Adam fills to the brim his Florida Gators coffee mug to start his business day at MCEDC. Since his years at the University of Florida, where he earned two undergrad degrees with honors, Adam has remained a die-hard Gator. He is as enthusiastic about Montgomery County business as he is devoted to his favorite sports team. Adam brings key area economic development experience and a CEcD designation to MCEDC as he works to recruit new businesses to diversify the local economy and help promote economic growth in Montgomery County.
Formerly with the Prince William County Department of Economic Development, Adam was a Business Development Manager where he managed attraction projects in the logistics and advanced manufacturing sectors. In addition, he represented the organization at numerous local and national conferences and tradeshows. Adam has also worked as a Business Development Associate for Enterprise Florida, Inc., supporting the business development team throughout the state of Florida. His work experience to date has yielded strong returns – assisting in the creation of over 3,500 jobs and generating $748 million in capital investment.
He notes Montgomery County’s unbeatable access to 18 federal headquarters including the FDA, NIH and NIST – and the educated workforce which he calls a knowledge powerhouse. He is also inspired by the many collaborative partnerships that have already been formed, with more to come.
Montgomery County feels like home to Adam, as his wife grew up in Clarksburg. They enjoy the beautiful outdoor setting of Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard – and no Upcounty visit is complete without a stop at the iconic Jimmie Cone in Damascus. Equipped with an M.S. in Political Science from Florida State University after his University of Florida education, Adam personally witnessed four national championships (2 football/2 basketball) and one Heisman Trophy winner. Taking a page from the Gators’ perseverance and his own personal work ethic, Adam follows this professional advice: Never stop learning and always try to improve yourself professionally and personally.
As an economic developer who also has juris doctor credentials next to her name, Nadia Khan is excited for the opportunity to help businesses gain local knowledge, resources and expertise to help them thrive in the county. She is a Business Development Specialist with MCEDC following work as an attorney for a Montgomery County law firm, representing national mortgage lenders in real estate and foreclosure litigation.
If details are at stake, Nadia is ready to pitch in, easily delving into the finer points of the latest financing options, tax credits, legislation, and zoning issues that may affect local businesses. She can locate the relevant section of the Montgomery County Code ‘faster than you can finish reading this sentence.’ A graduate of Johns Hopkins University with a degree in International Relations and a concentration in economic development, she graduated from Boston University School of Law with a juris doctor degree, and is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association.
In her current capacity, Nadia looks forward to helping new and existing businesses, and pursuing outreach efforts to understand and address their challenges. She is especially passionate about engaging with a diverse range of businesses including those that are traditionally underrepresented or minority-ownedto ensure that the economic development policy is reflective of the rich diversity of the county. The more voices that are represented, the better, Nadia notes.
When not at work, Nadia may be found enjoying the great outdoors including exploring local gem, Brookside Gardens. She may have a coffee in hand from one of the many MoCo independent coffee shops like newcomer Coffee Republic or Black Lion Cafe, for an Ethiopian twist. The proximity to D.C. and its many museums is a big draw, especially the National Museum of African American History.
In an unexpected resume twist, Nadia once worked as a production assistant on an independent horror film that was filmed and produced in Maryland – her consolation prize when she didn’t land the coveted lead actress role. We’re glad she has switched gears from the silver screen to the sweet spot of economic development.
Sarah has worked in community and economic development in Montgomery County and across Pennsylvania for the past 18 years. She has created riverfront parks, supported new farms, kick-started incubators and engaged civic leaders as they reimagined their former industrial towns. Wherever she is, Sarah’s professional goal remains the same — to provide people with access to new economic opportunities. As VP of Strategy, she is tasked with directing the creation of MCEDC's strategic initiatives.
Formerly, Sarah was Special Assistant to the Secretary in the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, Capital Projects Manager for the Department of Economic Development in Montgomery County, and spent many years working in Pittsburgh.
A graduate of Ohio University, where she studied community health, she also received a Master’s from Carnegie Mellon University in Public Policy & Management, with a concentration in economic development. She serves on the Rockville Planning Commission, the Montgomery County Food Council and on the incubator committee at Bethesda Green.
In her spare time, Sarah often has her family and friends in tow for outdoor adventures. She and her family frequent Sugarloaf Mountain, the Sligo Creek trail and the C&O Canal. She quenches her thirst locally with Rockhill Orchard’s free-range chocolate milk and any number of locally made beers. In addition to believing the Agricultural Reserve is the County’s most valuable resource, she’s also an ardent public transit fan, taking Metro into DC nearly every weekend to see some art, have brunch, attend a protest or visit her favorite stops like Eastern Market.
Throughout her economic development work, Sarah takes a holistic view of the community with an eye towards understanding how it’s changing and promoting innovation within it. Her plans for change here in Montgomery County are most definitely welcome.
David Petr is President and CEO of MCEDC, developing innovative strategies, strengthening partnerships and leading a team to promote Montgomery County as the ideal place to start, grow and expand business in the county’s key industries. With a spectrum of economic development, strategic business and marketing experience, David thrives on changing the culture of organizations to become more nimble, proactive and creative.
David was named to Washington Business Journal’s Power 100, Washington’s most influential newsmakers of 2017, after just 13 months at the helm of the organization. He is raising the profile of Maryland’s top-performing county, consistently out in the community meeting CEOs, entrepreneurs, startups and established companies. David’s expertise has contributed to rapid growth in key industries including Life Sciences and Technology. Through his responsive approach to the business community, he is aligning business needs directly to MCEDC’s strategic goals. He has spearheaded forward-thinking digital video campaigns: a Think Success video series where David interviews CEOs and business leaders and MOCO 365, a campaign that reveals the stories of leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators in the County.
In addition to a focus on expanding the local business community, David is active on the global front. He was recently part of a business delegation that went to South Korea and China and continues to introduce global business to the County. He is very involved in regional connectivity, collaborating with leaders throughout Maryland and throughout the Greater Washington area, understanding that regional business success is good business for Montgomery County.
David appreciates Montgomery County for its diversity of places, people and cultures. He loves exploring the many natural assets of the county, including the C&O Canal along the Potomac River. An avid photographer, he is frequently armed with his camera to capture the beauty of the county. David is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Texas at Austin.
Montgomery is truly a mosaic of people and cultures, and well known as a welcoming county where diversity is celebrated. Daniel Parra connects with the many diverse communities as the Small and Minority Business Development Director for MCEDC. In this capacity, he reaches out to minority and ethnic Chambers of Commerce and other business groups to learn about their constituencies, services, and priorities. With this knowledge, Daniel helps fill gaps and find what’s needed to help grow businesses while cultivating partnerships and opportunities within communities. He is a multiple honoree, having received the 2018 Minority Business Leader award from the Washington Business Journal and the 2018 Hispanic Leader of the Year award from the U.S. Minority Chamber of Commerce. Daniel is also proud to have been selected for Leadership Montgomery’s CORE program, which gives established leaders opportunities to connect with key local issues and other area decision makers.
Already well known within the Asian, African, and Hispanic communities, Daniel brings a high level of trust and professionalism to his work. He is bilingual in English and Spanish and joins MCEDC with 20 years of experience as a resourceful manager with a strong understanding of business expansion opportunities and networking. Most recently, he was the President/Executive Director of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for Montgomery County, where he worked with the Board of Directors to develop program to support business members, advocated and networked for the community and developed an international exchange forum for business owners. He is as comfortable chatting with local business owners as he is with legislators to advocate for small business owners.
Previously, he’s held positions as a District Sales Manager for Avon, Inc.; Financial Counselor and Educator, Hispanic Committee of Virginia; Managing Director, MD office for Latino Economic Development Corporation; and as an ESL (English as a Second Language) professional. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Colombia, Santafé de Bogotá, Colombia.
Montgomery County is home, where he enjoys exploring new restaurants, taking in sporting events and spending time with family. And as it turns out, he is willing to take a risk. When he was invited and gently challenged by his daughter to sky dive, he took a leap of faith and stepped out of a small plane in New York. Exhilarating as that experience was, Daniel is in his element here in Montgomery County helping to take local businesses to new heights.
Lynn has been with MCEDC from its inception, helping it develop into the creative organization it is today. Living in Montgomery County for more than 20 years, she’s seen the area grow as well. That insight and knowledge are assets to her craft every day.
As a senior copywriter, Lynn researches, creates strategic content for print and digital—including ad campaigns, newsletters, emails and websites. She is also instrumental in MCEDC’s branding, social media presence and assisting with special projects such as the MoCo365 videos.
A graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, Lynn went on to work for Discovery Communications, Goddard Gunster Public Affairs and NIH—and owns her own business, LTS Creative Works. But a few of her most memorable professional moments happened at classical WGMS Radio (an RKO station) where she rose to the position of Director of Advertising & Promotion. There, she met and interviewed stars like Placido Domingo, violinist Joshua Bell, and Benny Goodman—which turned out to be one of Benny’s last interviews.
Lynn also loves to travel. Whether it’s a tour of Europe or zip lining in Honduras, there’s always another adventure waiting. But she will always enjoy Montgomery County, where she can easily get to the beaches, mountains, or D.C. And as an active contributor to MCEDC’s mission, she looks forward to helping businesses make MoCo their home too.
Bill Tompkins is MCEDC’s Chief Operating Officer, helping to direct business operations and implement the Strategic Plan, working alongside President and CEO, David Petr. Together, they lead the charge to ensure that Montgomery County is one of the best places to grow business in the country.
He brings to MCEDC a strong and wide-ranging background in, business operations, strategic planning, marketing and nonprofit management, serving for most of his career as a senior executive in the media and entertainment industries with Fortune 500 companies. Bill has also had a consulting practice that advised companies on strategic business opportunities and brand transformation. He has been a key senior member of media companies including The Washington Post.
Former experience also includes work as President of the National Newspaper Publishers Association which represents over 200 Black-owned-and-operated newspapers across the nation. Much of his career was built at the Eastman Kodak Company, where he rose to become head of the global $700 million Motion Picture Film Group.
Bill’s interests are many, ranging from art and architecture to outdoor adventures. He has been in active leadership roles on nonprofit Boards including the Mosaic Theater Company of D.C. and the National Kidney Foundation/National Capital Area. He loves Rock Creek Park for its many biking and hiking trails. And, ignoring the win/loss record, he remains a die-hard Redskins fan. His family continues to root for the home team on fall football days and are longtime season ticket holders. When he can get away, the call of an advanced downhill ski run soothes his inner soul. His passion for theater helps to feed his creative side and his lifelong appreciation for the important contribution of arts to communities.
Bill received his MBA from Harvard Business School where he was a General Motors Fellow and received his BA in Economics, Magna Cum Laude from Tufts University.
A resident of Montgomery County for more than 30 years, Bill is helping to build the MCEDC team and contribute to programs that help current and potential businesses thrive.
A creative leader with the unique ability to connect storytelling and design, Al joined MCEDC to help spread the word about Montgomery County’s economic position to today’s global corporations, as well as its most exciting entrepreneurs.
In his role, Al concepts and designs the direction for new initiatives, executes complex creative projects, and develops individual brands for communities within the County.
Al’s career has included working for many of advertising’s top agencies. After starting out in Seattle, he went to New York’s Ammirati & Puris as a Senior Art Director. He eventually made his way to Chicago as an Associate Creative Director for DDB Worldwide, and most recently to the Washington, D.C. area as a Creative Director with Capital One.
Currently, Al serves as an Advisory Board member of Global Urban Development—a non-profit organization devoted to the major issues related to urban development around the world, including planning, design, economics, finance, transportation, employment, and more.
Al loves the general mindset of the people in Montgomery County, whether they’re professionals or residents. There’s a certain progressiveness that permeates their attitudes, and an international embrace that welcomes all those who move here.
Richelle Wilson is the Research Manager for MCEDC, responsible for creating market reports and supporting the business development team with market and business intelligence. She recently held the position of Research Analyst at Cushman & Wakefield, where her focus was on the suburban Maryland market. She authored quarterly reports, created ad hoc research, researched and analyzed local commercial real estate trends, and also assisted brokers with presentations for clients.
In her current position with MCEDC, Richelle is expanding her research skills by connecting more directly with the business community. She looks forward to helping MCEDC become the ‘go-to’ organization for businesses, regardless of size. Richelle gives back to the community as an auxiliary member of the Washington School for Girls and as an Ambassador for the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Her family’s native country is Liberia, and she loves to cook the foods of her heritage including the famous one-pot rice dish called Jollof rice. A self-proclaimed "sci-fi geek," she doesn’t miss Game of Thrones or the latest Star Trek flick. She’s got a bucket list of places to visit including Western Africa, South Africa and Europe.
Richelle is a graduate of Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Go Pirates! She is excited to spread the word about Montgomery County as a welcoming place for business. “Where else can you find a county that is so strong in the sciences field, close to the White House and rich in cultural diversity?”
In a culturally diverse county like Montgomery, Robel Worku fits right in with his global background and outlook. His family hails from Ethiopia, he speaks fluent Amharic, the language native to Ethiopia, and has studied abroad in the Dominican Republic. Today, he is a Business Development Specialist with MCEDC, tasked with assisting in recruitment and retention efforts for target industry sectors.
He has previously worked as an innovation fellow for the Montgomery County Innovation Program, focusing on public and private partnerships that bring smart city technology to the county. A graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media Studies, he is also a Gilman scholar who received a scholarship to intern abroad with UMD’s Smith School of Business. The coveted internship landed him in the Dominican Republic, where he worked with the Community Enterprise Solutions, a non-governmental organization (NGO). In addition to business training for budding entrepreneurs, the group provided concrete tools like solar lamps, water filters and reading glasses. These experiences helped him understand that basic needs must be met first before a business can take off.
In his current work, Robel looks forward to helping build bridges that connect entrepreneurs and businesses to the county government and their resources. He hopes to help plant the seed for businesses to think of MCEDC first as an invaluable partner for success in the county.
The ever-growing diversity in the area and abundance of things to do contribute to his love of the area, a place he’s called home since the age of 8. His crash course in learning English came from 90’s favorites like The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Bill Nye the Science Guy and Boy Meets World. Robel also gives a shout out to Wikipedia, a go-to resource that he credits for helping him through college. In his free time, he can be found hitting the gym, playing and watching sports, creating art sketches or traveling with friends. An avid fan of psychology and science fiction books, Robel draws inspiration from Elon Musk, who he sees as a fearless innovator and futurist. He is doing his part to add forward-thinking companies to the county’s business roster.
